Team History
The team started in 1970 under the ownership of Bill Harrison, and a group of other investors. Throughout the 1970s the Cape Cod Cubs played at the Cape Cod Coliseum. During this time the Cape Cod Cubs developed a fan base, and relationship with the community. This became the seed for the current Cape Cod Cubs of Hyannis. From the 1980's until 2008 the Cape Cod Cubs remained a hockey organization that the community and hockey fans wished for. As the finishing touches were being put on the Hyannis Youth and Community Center current team president Scott MacPherson, and a group of hockey legends decided that it was time to give the Community what they longed for and brought back the Cape Cod Cubs in their current form.
First on board as a supporter of the team was Paul Stewart who connected the old Cubs with the new. Paul Stewart, a Hall of Fame NHL referee and former NHL player with the Quebec Nordiques was a member of the original Cubs franchise, back in the early days of the organization. Stewart, along with MacPherson, was able to attract other former great hockey players, and legendary coach Jack Riley. Following Riley’s acceptance to support the team Board of Governors were Essa Tikkanen, Igor Larionov, Val Kamensky, and Hollywood film director Bobby Farrelly. This group of friends, all from different charitable hockey team events, was able to go out and attract a variety of world class coaches and hockey players. In late June, the teams franchise was accepted into the IJHL in the Northern division with the newly hired Head Coach Dan Hodge. Dan Hodge comes from one of the most famous hockey families in New England. His father, Ken Hodge, is a multiple Stanley Cup winner, his three all played professional hockey.
Opening night was September 18th, 2009 in which the Cubs scored the first goal of the game, in the first minutes of the game, their first goal in over 30 years. A sellout crowd in the first night only highlighted what was to come all season long, as the team was able to break all league attendance records in their first year. The team had great success this past year and was capped off by a championship in early March. The team recently agreed to a multi-year agreement with the Town of Barnstable to keep the Cubs at home at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center for decades to come.
